Watching this movie felt like an out of body experience.
I still consider myself a Charlie Kaufman fan, which is a little odd since he's barely done anything the past 16 years that I've liked, and yet I regularly check for news of new films he's involved in on the internet. It's been quite a puzzle why there has been so little from him in all that time, just two not very well-realised movies.
What I presume is the problem is Kaufman knows he has the reputation of the 'big brain' guy, and the pressure of having to continually surprise the world and surpass the majestic work of his past is weighing heavily on him. I also think it's very clear he's deeply depressed.
There's always been a melancholic base to Kaufman's work, but from Synecdoche onwards, it's just run wild and extinguished any joy or delight that he used to be mindful enough to include and sweeten the pill. When Kaufman was still writing scripts for other people to direct, he had to work to make what he was trying to say clear, likeable and entertaining. Starting with Synecdoche, and then even more so with Anomalisa, he no longer had to do that, and so all of us fans of John Malkovich, Adaptation and Eternal Sunshine are paying the price.
I've so far not read the book on which ITOET is based, but as I understand it *SPOILERS* the big reveal is that the whole story is the imagination of the older Jake, now an aged janitor in the school, writing out the various ways his life could have gone, just before he kills himself. But this is not at all clear in the film, as it ends before that happens. And it strikes me we probably wouldn't care any more if it had. This is bad.
As to the film's ending, my guess would be the snow piled up on the janitor's car in the end, parked outside the school, is an indication that he's now dead, but what the hell do I know.
I do know this: If you need to have read the book to get the movie, the movie is a failure. I'm sorry, I don't make the rules. They were here before I got here. And I know I'm Thinking Of Ending Things is constructed out of overly-prolonged and exclusively depressing scenes that don't go anywhere or reveal anything interesting enough to warrant their inclusion. Yes, there are a good few flashes of the maker's old intelligence and insight, but they are small and widely spaced apart - really just crumbs of tastiness on a platter of agony.
And yet, for all of that, I'm still a fan. Somehow. I guess that's what I'm saying. Maybe the next one will be better.
Im tellin yah! Hes dyin in the snow here! This ‘ntire movies been his fadin fever dream. The movie Eraserhead seems relevant here, several parallels. THE MF SOUNDTRACK BROOO. I would suggest watching Being John Malkovich and then Adaptation in that order. The themes that cross over are brilliant. I said id unsub if you posted vid praising this movie 🔫🔫🔫🔫. Don't be afraid to ask the girl you like guys. Before its to late. Legendary. Yeah easily said not quite true. The Strangers should have been on this list for that moment that the man in the mask looked through the glass door while Kristin was trying to use the phone.
The Exorcist is one of my favorite movies, and it shouldn't be on this list. The face was on the FULL SCREEN. My boy Charlie Kaufman is the 🐐. Ok can someone help point out the ghostly image that took over a family photo in the Poltergeist scene please. Just watched this and have some real confused, anxious, not good, not bad, thrilled. This video was amazing. Mentioning Jessie Buckley's appearance in Chernobyl but not Jesse Plemons, wtf netflix. What's the name of a background song. Can anybody tell me where I can find the theme for this movie (used in this scene. its composer? None of the soundtrack information I have found online tells me. Is it an original? It sounds like it could be Brion.
This movie is so depressing af I loved it tho. Charlie Kaufman is amazing at writing movies.
Amazing.
I love how u used the same aspect ratio from the movie, nice touch.
Okay okay. What was and what we wished it was.
This tries too hard to be interesting & artistic but it turns out to be silly. The last 25 minutes makes you wish you didn't spend the first 100. proves it's a waste of time time rward or back.
Does anyone know where I can find the music, I've tried everywhere.
